So first of all, what exactly is a digital nomad? Well, there are lots of types of digital nomads but essentially they are people who work online from anywhere around the world, whenever they like. All you need is a computer, an internet connection and then the world’s your oyster! While it’s not for everyone, there are lots of benefits of working remotely and travelling at the same time although it can be hard to know how to start off becoming a digital nomad.

So what are some of the benefits of working remotely? Well, the main thing obviously is that you can travel the world while working as you go! You have a lot of freedom (depending on your income) and flexibility and a lot of digital nomads are their own boss.

It’s not all a bed of roses however as it can be quite hard to land your first clients and earn enough income while travelling from place to place. In the early days, you’ll also probably spend most of your time working rather than relaxing and hanging out on the beach! You’re also dependent on a good internet connection and some of the more expensive parts of the world might be off-bounds for a while until you have a steady flow of cash coming in. As such you really need to have a think about whether the lifestyle suits you before diving into your new world of online work!

Nowadays, there are a wide variety of fields in which digital nomads work. Whether it is as a business owner, graphic designer, accountant or virtual assistant, there are loads of ways in which you can travel the world while working online. All you need to do is make sure that you have the skills needed to succeed online.

Before quitting your job and telling your boss you’ve had enough, it is a good idea to work on a profitable side business which you can later on turn into your full-time job. Alternatively, think about the online sector you’d like to work in and start developing the skills needed to succeed in that field. This could be building websites, writing articles or teaching languages; it all depends on what you’re interested in and your particular skillset. There are however loads of free online courses if you ever want to learn something new and start on a new path.

Once you’ve got yourself set up, you need to find clients and in this day and age there are loads of platforms online where you can sell your skills online. While some of them are short-term gigs, others can see you collaborating with a company for years. Another option is to start your own blog, website or e-commerce business but again you will have to market it to people. You can even get a full-time remote job which allows you to travel the world as long as you clock in each day!

After you’ve landed your first few clients and are on your way to becoming a digital nomad, the task now becomes to motivate yourself to work everyday when there’s a beautiful beach next to you. It can be tough at first but once you get into the swing of things it can be an amazing experience and way to life life!
