The many islands of Thailand are ripe for romance, though some Thai island destinations provide a better setting for romantic vacation than others. One of those islands is Koh Lanta. Of course, the best way to making any vacation picture perfect, especially one where the two of you can blissfully connect, is to know as much as possible so you can plan your getaway without incident. Let us help you with that.
Getting there
Koh Lanta doesn’t have an airport. There’s one in nearby Krabi as well as Trang though. You can opt for a minivan transfer, but that’s not very romantic is it? The best way to come in from the airports is to hop on the ferry or a boat and enjoy the splendid views on the way. Pro tip: while Koh Lanta isn’t overrun with tourists, the locals will surely know how to spot you and will try to convince you that you need to pay them to help you get from the port. Be assured that this isn’t true at all and carry about your business. You will not be stranded at the port as there are plenty of taxis and tuk-tuks around.
Accommodation
Another important aspect of your romantic getaway in Koh Lanta is where you stay. You’ll find a wide range of options from cheap on up to 5-star accommodations. Honestly, if this is your chance for romance, don’t skimp out. One ideal way to do this is to plan your trip during the slow season which is May through October. The rates are much lower which means you can stay at one of the nicest places on the island for much less than you think. Additionally, it’s never a bad idea to get in with one of the good resorts as they often offer pick-up service once you make it to the port.
How to get around
Koh Lanta isn’t a very big island, so getting around it isn’t very hard to do. Some travelers like to rent their own motorbikes so they have the freedom of riding around on their own. However, if that’s not your cup of tea, you can hire a driver with a tuk-tuk to take you wherever you want to go. That’s especially helpful if you want to have cocktails.
What to do and see
On Koh Lanta, you’ll find plenty of ways to fill your days. Along the main road and down the side streets, you can try out the many cafes, restaurants and bars in the area, plus there are beaches, caves, waterfalls, and so much more to do with each other that you’ll fall in love all over again. Here’s a breakdown of the things you and your love will definitely want to explore together.
The beaches
Long Beach is the longest beach on Koh Lanta. Like the name didn’t give it away or anything! It’s also one of the best with gorgeous waters and fine sand. Swim together in this serene setting or take a walk hand-in-hand. Plus, there are many restaurants on the beach that are ideal for sipping cocktails. It’s not the only beach though. You can (and should!) also see Klong Nin, Klong Khong, Diamond Cliff, and Kantiang Bay.
Mu Ko Lanta National Park
This national park also includes some of the surrounding islands. For the adventurous couple, you’ll find natural experiences to partake in, like hiking on natural trails and plenty of places to snap photos for Instagram to make everyone back home jealous of your travels and your love. Don’t miss the lighthouse while you’re here!
Old Town
If you’ve rented motorbikes, you’ll love exploring Old Town. There are cute shops and restaurants, plus a pier full of history. You’ll learn much about Koh Lanta here, plus you can pick up souvenirs to forever remember your trip together.
Emerald Cave
Do not miss the day trip to Ko Mook Island’s Emerald Cave. There is nothing else like it anywhere. Hidden in a cave, you’ll find this secret lagoon with waters that are a glowing emerald green (hence the name). It is one of the most romantic sights to see.
Khlong Chak Waterfall
Go ahead and chase waterfalls. Here though, it’s not very big but that’s OK. It’s incredibly fun to ride in on an elephant so go for it. The journey there through the jungle will take you around some little caves too. Remember, romance is part adrenaline so keep that spark alive!
And there are plenty more things to do in Koh Lanta as well, from cooking classes, to rock climbing, to Thai boxing classes and beyond. What makes it all romantic is the general peace of this place coupled with stunning views, which is an ideal destination for the coupled-up!
